“Burn your bridges” means making a call so final there’s no way back. It comes from soldiers torching the bridge behind them so that no retreat would be possible.
As many, many expressions coming from English, its direct translation queimar as pontes wouldn’t really make any sense for the average Brazilian (although I’ve been told that European Portuguese uses it). So I’ve curated two of the most commons ways we have to convey the same thing in Brazilian Portuguese. Let’s get to it!
Fechar as portas
Fechar as portas: literally "to close the doors"
Straight-up the closest match. When talking about ending a professional. It’s about blocking access; no coming back in. Works for quitting your job in anger, betraying a client, or cutting ties in any kind of professional setting.
Eu fechei as minhas portas quando eu assumi essa posição na administração.
I burned my bridges when I took this management position.
Maria não fecha portas que ela não tem que fechar.
Maria doesn’t burn bridges she doesn’t have to.

Cortar relações
Cortar relações: literally "to cut relations"
This one’s all about the people side. Cortar means “cut,” like slicing ties clean and quick. Perfect when you’re stressing broken bonds over missed chances.
Ela decidiu não cortar as relações depois da discussão, esperando por uma reconciliação no futuro.
She decided not to burn bridges after the argument, hoping for future reconciliation.
Na política, alguns candidatos escolhem cortar as relações.
In politics, some candidates choose to burn bridges.
É melhor abordar os problemas diretamente do que cortar as relações.
It’s better to address issues directly than to burn bridges.
Ele é conhecido por cortar as relações, tornando difícil fazer amigos.
He is known to burn bridges, making it hard to make friends.

As you can see, both mean you can’t go back like in “burning your bridges,” just from different angles. Fechar as portas is about lost doors and opportunities.
