The verb fazer has many meanings, but in general they derive from to create/prepare, in the same sense as to make, and from referring to unknown/unspecified actions, in the same sense as to do.

Fazer: To make
1. to create or prepare something by combining materials or putting parts together
Eu vou fazer chá!
I’ll make tea!
Você tem que fazer esse barulho?
Do you have to make that noise?
Hoje é possível fazer uma bomba se você tiver o equipamento.
Today it’s possible to make a bomb if you have the equipment.
Eu sei como fazer pão.
I know how to make bread.
Ela tá fazendo um bolo de framboesa.
She’s making a raspberry cake.
Eu tô fazendo uma mesa nova.
I’m making a new table.
Meu irmão tá fazendo uma casa.
My brother is making a house.1
Ela faz suas próprias roupas.
She makes her own clothes.
Como você faz feijoada sem feijões?
How do you make feijoada without beans?
Tudo que a gente faz aqui são caixas.
All we make here are boxes.

2. used to refer to actions that you do not mention by name or do not know about
O que você vai fazer hoje à noite?
What are you going to do tonight?
O que você vai fazer agora?
What are you going to do now?
Eu tô fazendo isso, porque é a coisa certa a se fazer.
I’m doing this, because it is the right thing to do.
O que você tá fazendo?
What are you doing?
O que seu filho tá fazendo com meu carro?
What are your son doing with my car?
Eu tô fazendo isso por mim.
I’m doing this for me.
Ela tava só fazendo o trabalho dela.
She was just doing her job.
